Situated just across the Venetian Lagoon from Venice, the lovely islands of Murano and Burano are world-renowned for their traditional artisan crafts. You’ll meet up with your guide in central Venice for the short boat ride to Murano, a picturesque grouping of islands that has been home to some of the world’s finest artisan glassblowers since the 13th century.

Visit the workshop of a local glassblower to watch delicate forms take shape from molten glass through a combination of rolling, shaping with iron tools and blowing through a long metal tube. Learn tricks of the trade, like how minerals are added to give the candy-colored vases and chandeliers of Murano their vibrant hue. Enjoy some free time on the island to explore other workshops and perhaps pick up a souvenir to take home.

Hop back on the boat for the scenic ride to Burano, where traditional lacemaking workshops are scattered among the island’s brightly colored homes. Learn about the history of Burano lace and how it was once sought after by monarchs across Europe for its exquisite quality. You’ll get a chance to watch local craftswomen creating lace through a series of finely detailed weaving and stitching, carrying on a tradition that has thrived here for centuries.

If you like, visit the Burano Lace Museum on your own to delve even deeper into the history of this elegant craft. Enjoy free time to explore the island and peruse local shops before the return boat trip to Venice.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Isola di Murano
The enchanting islands of Murano and Burano are the perfect change of pace from Venice’s crowded streets and waterways. And the perfect way to reach them is by private water taxi. Faster and sturdier than a gondola, nimbler and less crowded than a waterbus, water taxis are the premier way to travel in Venice. Few visitors get to experience them, but yours is included, along with an expert local guide who’ll explain Venice’s history as a titan of trade along the way. Your first port of call is a specially chosen glassblowing workshop on Murano. In the Middle Ages, only Murano’s artisans possessed the secrets of this craft, and sharing them was punishable by execution. You’ll get to witness modern glassblowers wield those once secret techniques, shaping delicate and dazzling works of art from molten glass. Then admire the workshop’s finest work in its gallery, and perhaps take home a piece of your own – with a tour discount. Or explore more of Murano, including its peaceful canals and stunning Byzantine church.
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Stop At:
Burano
The locals of nearby Burano still maintain the island’s tradition of handmade lace, some of the finest anywhere in the world. You’ll get to observe lace being hand-stitched the way it has been for generations. Then visit the lace museum to see the island’s greatest work, or simply enjoy the photo opportunity provided by the colorful houses, brightly painted so sailors could see home as they returned from the sea. When you cross the lagoon back to Venice, you’ll have a renewed appreciation of the crafts that put the city on the map so long ago.

Great afternoon trip to...

Great afternoon trip to escape the hustle bustle of Venice. We were looking to escape the tourist swarms and stumbled across this tour and couldn’t be happier we did it. Easy to find meeting spot, informative tour and a fun afternoon.

2 Island Gems
Kirby_B

Very quaint islands. Watching glass being made was interesting and they didn't exert any pressure to buy anything. Lace making a little less interesting but Burano is a real gem. More time to wander both islands would be better.

Excellent price for the value especially it was almost 5 hours or so tour. Really cool to see glass making and also different islands around Venice.

Great day out

Really nice trip with a lovely guide - would’ve been nice to perhaps have a little longer in Murano (to have a look around and perhaps visit another glass factory) but the trip to Burano was perfect - all in all a great day out - recommended!

It was interesting watching the glass and lace being made, as well as being able to have a relaxing boat ride. We also really enjoyed the lunch we had which consisted of really good fish.

Nice little get away!

Our tour guide was good. It was a nice little escape from Venice. I just think there should be a little more time to explore the cities. We only had an hour or less in each. Not even emotive to eat lunch. We also got back at 2:30 instead of 3.

Disappointing
Kelly_F
, Aug 2022
This was supposed to be a small group tour but they definitely exceeded the maximum 20 people. As a result, a bunch of people were crammed inside the boat which was stifling hot and miserable. The glass factory was fun and informative, but you do t get to see any other part of Murano. You are held captive at the one glass factory for the entire time — about 2 hours total between the demonstration and then shopping. Burano was much more pleasant where you could explore some on your own.

Nice Boat Tour

, Aug 2022
Nice tour of two of the nearby islands off of Venice. Short stops at Murano and Burano by boat provided a nice change from the atmosphere on Marco Island. Murano provided a nice look at the craft of glass blowing and some great art pieces. Burano wasn't as interesting except for the colorful buildings.

Great visit both the islands, the guide was informative on the way there and back. Great to see glass blowing and the sheer talent there and the exquisite lace work in Burano.. the price is one star less as there was a local operator offering the same but was 15% cheaper.

Great experience

The glass blowing demonstration was incredible and even though Murano doesn't have mucho more to do, it is definitely a must. Burano was beautiful, we had some time to walk around, grab some food and take beautiful photos. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the area and she was super nice

The beautiful buildings...
Bev_B
, Aug 2022
The beautiful buildings on Burano were the highlight for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the bright, cheerful colors. It was an absolutely charming place. Unfortunately, the time on these two islands was entirely too short. There was little to no time to explore. The demonstrators were wonderful but then we had no chance to wander in the shops to see the creations. We were basically held prisoner in the Murano glass factory because there was no time to visit elsewhere. Someone is definitely getting a kickback. I’ll be returning information 2024 but it won’t be with a tour.

Nice to get away from the city center crowds

This tour was a bargain and well organized. Two beautiful islands with narration by our guide for such a modest price. We enjoyed the glass demonstration on Murano and were wowed by all of the amazing pieces in their store. We had enough time to walk around and explore the town. The lace making demonstration on Burano was dull but fortunately short. We loved walking around the lovely town with all of the brightly colored buildings. It is very picturesque. The boat used on this tour was modern and comfortable, and we enjoyed seeing the other islands. Well worth the time and money.
