Your gladiator lesson takes place at the Gladiator School of Rome, located near the Colosseum on the historic Appian Way. Specializing in the reenactment of ancient Roman life and gladiator fighting, your instructors are members of the Historic Group of Rome and will begin your class by providing you with your costume — a traditional belt, tunic, leather gloves, and a training sword known as a rudis.

Learn the basic skills of gladiator sword fighting before summoning your imagination and channeling your inner ancient Roman as you fight off ferocious lions and battle other sword-wielding gladiators. If you wish, you can participate in an optional gladiator tournament, complete with a prize for the victor. Either way, all participants receive a certificate of accomplishment at the end of your lesson.

Friends and family are allowed to watch your class from the viewing platform. Admission to the Gladiator School of Rome Museum is also included so you can check out gladiator weapons and other artifacts.

My boys (12 & 9) loved every minute of gladiator school. The entire two hours held their attention and they had a lot of fun. After gladiator school, we went to the Colosseum and having learned all the gladiator information really made their Colosseum experience “come to life.”

Participation tour for kids in Rome

My boys (10 and 12) thought this experience was ‘amazing’. They liked being shown how gladiators trained, and of course loved the training, first with wooden swords, then with shields and swords together. Our kids are competitive soccer players, so are focused, and well, competitive, so they took it seriously and learned all they could. They loved when the gladiator instructor watched them and awarded ‘points’ for their sparring sessions. For them, it made the next days Coliseum tour more relevant and interesting. One of the highlights of Rome for our kiddos.

The best part was...

The best part was practicing with the wooden swords and the battles which ended up being a bit short in terms of totally time. And it would have been nice for the museum to be self-led with a bit more information on the weapons, armor and other great artifacts they museum had.

My 18 year old son & I enjoyed every minute! Our “trainer” taught us about the Gladiators, their history, equipment, & weaponry. Then we got to work learning how they trained. It was a fantastic experience, one which we will never forget!

We LOVED it!

We did the gladiator school with Xavier and our kiddos (ages 8 and 10) said it was their favorite part of the whole vacation! The museum part of the tour was super interesting for the adults, and the opportunity to interact with all the helmets, swords, etc., combined with Xavier’s knack for engaging the children, really kept them involved as well. Then the gladiator training and opportunity to try out their new skills in a stadium was fantastic! They could not stop talking about it. Definitely recommend this tour if you have school age kids, it is so much fun and was a highlight of our trip! 😊

This was a fun activity for my wife and I and our 10 year old. We saw the Colosseum earlier in the day and came to gladiator training in the late afternoon. This offered a little fun and physical activity for all of the family. We learned a few things as well and were offered a good experience that we will remember.

We had so much fun and was a great activity along with learning about Roman Gladiators and their way of war. My six year old son loved it! My husband and I loved it, this was the highlight of our trip. Very very hands on and informative....so much fun! Super close to Rome and they will call a taxi to get you back to the city center or wherever you need to go.

We came as a group and we’re merged with kids. Bad

We had three couples that we thought would be together. Instead we were grouped in with a half a dozen kids and their parents and there was not even room for the women in our group to participate. Kids are great but. It what we were looking to do. We wanted to challenge the men against the women and instead the men were challenged by 7 year olds while we sat on the benches. We mentioned this before they started and it was just ignored. There were many other spots where they had 4 and 6 players. Yet they ignored our response to have just the six of us together. If we wanted to play with children we would have stayed home with our grandchildren. We left before it was over and the women in the group did. It get to do anything. Poorly run. Could be a great fun adventure had they actually thought about who they were pairing up. We won’t recommend and will not be back.

We who are about to have fun salute you!

This was awesome! We did this as a family, that is, a 12-year-old boy, his mom, and his dad. Nico was our gladiator trainer. He was fabulous!! Great with kids, put on a great show, made the experience fun (and educational), and afterwards arranged a cab for us to get home. It could not have been more fun! It is definitely meant for kids but I’m a big kid at heart and I had a ton of fun doing it with Peter. If you are going to the Colosseum with kids, do this first!!!!

Hands on family gladiator fun!

Great fun. Lots of hands on learning for the kids and we were all put through our paces in the arena! So much to see and so many helmets and weapons to hold. Our gladiator was really informed and answered every question put his way! We weren't as confident as answering his questions but we tried our best. Only watch out would be insects... The school is in a very green and shady area and we are all covered with bites today. Bring insect repellent and suncream!

Chance to meet your family in battle!

My 8 year old daughter and I signed up and had a lot of fun! Our lanista was informative and humorous. The first part in the museum was really interesting. The training in the gladiator school was tough and competitive. The final part was brilliant - won't spoil the surprise. Highly recommended. I'd suggest leaving plenty of time if coming by taxi as the wait and the traffic can take longer than you think.
