This sightseeing tour of the Bavarian heartland and Salzburg begins in central Munich. Meet and greet the tour guide and hop on board the air-conditioned coach. It’s a 2-hour drive east to the Austrian city of Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and setting for the film the Sound of Music.
Explore the city at leisure, with stunning views of the Lower Bavarian Alps, visiting such landmarks as Salzburg Cathedral, perhaps the city's most significant piece of church architecture; St. Peter’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery; and Mozartplatz, or Mozart Square, large courtyard in the heart of old town Salzburg dedicated to composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Also see the fountain at Mirabell Palace, well known for its appearance in the classic movie the Sound of Music.
After lunch at a local restaurant (own expense), travel to nearby Lake Wolfgangsee. Walk along the lake and admire the scenery or take a boat ride (own expense) on the lake to see the Maria Plain Pilgrimage Church and the White Horse Inn, from the 1900s operetta of the same name.
On the return trip to Munich, see Lake Mondsee, another famous site from the Sound of Music.
The second day of the tour begins again in central Munich. Board the coach for a 1.5-hour journey, heading north on the Romantic Road to the village of Harburg. Explore this small town, highlighted by Harburg Castle, one of the most impressive remaining medieval castles in Germany.
Then board the coach for a trip to the picturesque town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg, also known as the Jewel of the Middle Ages, is widely believed to be the most well-preserved medieval old town in all of Germany.
Take approximately three hours to explore the town at leisure, do some shopping and enjoy lunch at a traditional German restaurant. Stroll through the town’s winding, cobbled lanes. See the half-timbered houses, the Renaissance Town Hall and the almost fairy tale appearance of the majestic town gates that welcome Rothenburg’s many visitors from near and far. Some of the local sites to see are St. Jakob's Church, the most important church in Rothenburg, or the Medieval Crime Museum (Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum), with its vast collection of exhibits detailing more than 1,000 years of German and European legal history.
The tour ends with a return trip to Munich.
