How To Get To The Departure Site
Anthony_S
, Jul 2022
The overall Tour was incredible, and highly recommend it to any/everyone.
Though, if you're not from the area and/or taking this tour for the first time, it is very confusing on how to get to the departure site. My kids and I were staying in Grand Canyon Village, booked a 9am helicopter tour weeks prior, and were under the impression that the departure site was nearby (either within walking distance or the helicopter company would provide a round-trip shuttle). To our dismay, we learned that we need to take the free (Grand Canyon Village-provided) Purple shuttle 10 miles south of Grand Canyon Village to the "Grand Canyon National Park Airport" located in a town called Tusayan. We realized this the day before the tour (not a big deal - at least we thought so). We read the (Grand Canyon Village-provided) map and it said the Purple shuttle runs every 20 minutes starting at 8am from IMAX. We thought IMAX was located in the Grand Canyon Village Visitor Center since there was a similar movie-like attraction there (and is also the main hub for all of the shuttles 'Red, Blue, Orange and Purple'). We arrived at the Canyon Village Visitor Center by 7:55am, only to read the sign "there" that (more clearly states), the Purple shuttle arrives at the Visitor Center by 8:30am "coming" from the town of Tusayan (which again, is the city the helicopter company operates from and is the departure site). Obliviously this didn't work, as it would have made us late for our tour. So we tried Uber, but Uber does not provide service in that area. We called the helicopter company to let them know of our situation and ask if they could pick us up. They said no (to picking us up) and instructed us to take the Purple shuttle once it arrives, and since we'd arrive at the departure site by 8:50am (still ahead of the 9am departure time), they would see if they can hold the helicopter. Once we boarded the Purple shuttle, we then learned the the Purple shuttle doesn't take you directly to Grand Canyon National Park Airport (the departure site). Rather, it drops you off at the Best Western Hotel which is a quarter mile from the departure site. As soon as we were dropped off, we sprinted through a local trail that takes you to the departure site. We arrived by 8:50am (an incredible feat unto itself), only to be told that we were late, and had to be bumped to a later time that day.
Moral of the story, arrange for a local TAXI CAB to take you to Grand Canyon National Park Airport (if you have no other means of transportation).
My additional two cents: it would be nice if this was all spelled-out once you book the tour with the helicopter company OR (novel idea), the helicopter company provided round-trip transportation - after all...the Customer and the helicopter company are there for the same reason.
Excellent tour

Christian was our pilot. He was quite capable. The view was magical. Would do it again! The hummer tour was awesome. Ted was our guide. He had great stories of the park and was super knowledgeable about the landscape and wildlife. The sunset was beautiful.

This was a spiritual experience seeing the Grand Canyon from a mile in the air. There are no words or pictures that can do it justice. Worth every minute of this trip and would recommend this to anyone.

I highly recommend this trip. Seeing the canyon from land is an amazing experience. We were able to take the helicopter after the land experience and it gave such a different perspective. Our guides for both experiences were engaging and knowledgeable. I will never forget approaching the canyon via helicopter. Seeing both the south and north canyons have such a great contrast.
Fantastic view of a great natural wonder.

Brian was a great pilot, smooth flight even with wind in the area. What a view, well worth the cost to see what we saw on the flight.
Excellent Experience!

Did this tour a few years ago, back in 2012 and it was an amazing ride and the pilot was awesome. You could tell that he loved his job and had a great time doing it. I can’t say the same thing with my most recent trip. The ride was not exciting nor was the pilot. It was disappointing.

Canyon from the air
Stephanie_M
, May 2022
The experience was amazing to see the canyon this way but the information they shared during flight was prerecorded and not very informative. Would have liked it better if the pilot was telling us about the canyon and we were allowed to converse during flight.

Don’t miss this tour!

Our Grand Canyon helicopter tour was absolutely amazing! Our pilot was extremely knowledgeable and made us feel at ease on the flight. We were able to view all parts of the canyon. Being able to view the North rim was exciting because it is very difficult from the ground. We will do this again!
I want to stress that all...
John_A
, Apr 2022
I want to stress that all pilots/operators/staff were very professional. The hummer tour was disappointing. I had expected that we would have more narrative of the sites, instead it ended up being more of a shuttle to a couple of places along the rim.

We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.

Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.
On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.
You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted.
If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
