Had a great time with this group tour. The commute from the port to the caves and back to the port was very comfortable.
The organization was a touch chaotic at times. Firstly we were left waiting at the pick up point looking for the right sign. it wasn't a long wait but long enough for is to have not got adjacent seats for our family of 4. Other folks had already occupied the window seats, leaving single seats vacant.
Also at the Melissani lake, the crowd was massive, so the tour girl could have done better in keeping our tour's folks together. There was quite a bit of panic about the possibility of missing the ship
Enjoyable experience !

Expensive and Average (at best)

Our pick up was forgotten about and had we not made a phone call, we wouldn’t have made it. That made us waiting in the mid day sun (34c) for 35 mins longer than we should have with 2 young kids. The travel time was roughly 3hrs round trip to two locations to see things for 15 mins each. Way more time was spent either travelling or queuing at the lake. The lakes and caves are worthy of seeing, but not with a tour company, it makes it incredibly expensive for what should be a very cheap day out. Go see the attractions for sure but just make your own way there if you can and do other stuff as well. An expensive and pretty much wasted afternoon for us to be honest.
Good value trip

What made me upset was that the tour lady told me that my 2 year old son could not seat on my lap and would not have a seat on the bus. She wanted him to share the seat with his 6 year old sister. When I complained she said: “welcome to Greece”. This happened in the very first 5 minutes of the tour. I found it unsafe and disrespectful.

Nice little day trip to the cave systems around the town of Sami. Tour was ran by Avalon Travel Kefalonia. Very professional and well run setup. The tour itself was short as it's a cruise ship shore excursion. The cave systems were absolutely amazing to view. Melissani Lake was my favorite. Be warned, Drogarati involves an almost 100 m decent via steps and the place can get slippery but otherwise a well worth experience. Would have like some time in Sami as well.

Very Interesting!

The actual tour was really great. Both the cave and the lake were like nothing I had every seen. Lake visit lasted about 15 minutes on a boat in the water. There wasn’t any swimming allowed. Heard some history about the city but missed out on seeing the city itself except from the bus. Beautiful landscape and great guides.

Great tour

MAria was a Great guide. She understood our concern as our ship changed its timeline. We arrived first at the lake before other organized cruise ships tour arrived. So our line was somewhat shorter.
Little boat can only take 12 people at a time and only 3 to 4 boats at a time. The visit of the lake was lovely too bad we couldn't swim in it
After we took the bus for 15 minutes to go to the cave This was also nice.
We arrived 1/2 hour earlier and I was able to walk into town
Don't bother with the cruise ship excursion!

This is the same trip as the ship but for half the price. The tour started out with lots of history about the island on our drive to Melissani Lake. You look at the photo on the website and think that has to be photoshopped. HOWEVER, the picture is real. The water is amazing and the pictures are breathtaking. We left the lake and went to Drogarati Cave which was also very interesting. I wish we could have heard a concert down there. I'm sure that was amazing back in the day. We also had a little shopping time in the gift shop which was nice. This trip did require lots of walking up and down steps and inclines. If you have mobility issues, you might want to consider that. The trip was wonderful and I have lots of amazing pictures to show for it.

Although the underground Melissani Lake was beautiful, the whole tour took 4-1/2 hours and we only spent 15 minutes on the boat touring the lake. The cave visit lasted perhaps 10 minutes after descending 130 steps as we had to get back in order to make it back to not miss the cruise ship. We were in the bus, or in line to visit the attraction, approximately 3-1/2 hours, too long in my book for such short visit to the attractions.
Fun excursion!

We enjoyed the boat ride on the lake and the cave. The kids thought it was cool. The ride there goes across the mountain and it is a pretty ride. It was a very hot day so this was a good excursion because it was mostly in the shade and you could keep cool. There is a bathroom and a place to get a sandwich/snack at the lake stop. Only negative was the bus driver wouldn’t turn on the bus and made us wait on a hot and sweaty bus until we got going at each stop. Even with the AC it wasn’t very cool on the bus.
Kefalonia is just beautiful and I...

Kefalonia is just beautiful and I really enjoyed our tours of the caves and lake. It's about an hour drive there and back but I enjoyed the gorgeous views of the countryside while learning about some history by our guide. There was a long line for Melissani Lake but it is lovely inside - we took a little boat across the lake - love my photos!
We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.
