The Basics

Popular and perpetually busy, St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice. Avoid the long lines and save time skip-the-line tickets or opt for an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the interior, given the complexity of its art and architecture.

A guided private or small-group evening tour offers a unique and intimate experience, and the basilica is located on St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a basilica tour with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

Great tour with a lot of information. We even got a private gondola because of covid 19. We can recommend the tour.

Skip the Line: Best of Venice Walking Tour with St Mark's Basilica
Friendly, knowledgeable guide who tailored the tour to our needs and amended the route when our daughter started feeling unwell. Arranged for a rooftop viewing of Venice when a visit to St. Mark's turned out to be impractical due to COVID

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
The guide was excellent; very knowledgeable of Venice and the history behind it. The skip the line at the Doge's palace was valuable, but recent COVID restrictions made the skip line line impossible for St. Mark's Basilica (for all tour guides in town). Still, the wait to get into the Basilica was not long, and felt even shorter as our guide continue to provide us information during the wait. I would book again if I return to Venice.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
Our guide, Pamela, was extremely knowledgeable about Venice’s history and pointed out some very interesting features of the city’s history as well as the two buildings we toured in detail. But Piazza San Marco was flooded at the start of the tour by high water in the canals, and my traveling party had to deal with a cold rain as we walked around in the evening. That took away from our experience, but the tour guide Pamela was terrific.

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
The four hour walking tour of Venice was terrific. The four hours were split pretty evenly between sites of Venice near St. Mark’s square and the “Basilica and Doge Palace”. We had separate guides for each of the two pats and each guide was excellent. They were knowledgable, courteous, humorous and interesting in what they shared about what we saw. If your going to Venice, the four hour walking tour is a must!

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
Very informative tour and Susan was an amazing tour guide, very knowledgeable and attentive. The tour was very long, but this was mentioned in the description, so just be aware of this and wear comfortable shoes and a warm coat, if you’re going in winter like we did. All in all, I’d recommend for a crash course if Venice!

Unexpectedly Awesome

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
Our guide (Sara) was awesome! Took care of the group, and gave good information without going into too much detail. She kept our teenagers engaged throughout the tour - something no other guide has been able to do. The Cathedral is beautiful, but the Doges Palace was what was unexpected. The place was amazing and we were surprised how little attention this palace gets. It needs to be seen to be believed. This was a tour worth the price.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The church has been rebuilt, expanded, and delicately restored over the centuries.

  • Like most churches in Italy, St. Mark’s Basilica requires visitors to wear appropriate clothing—no exposed shoulders, knees, or midriffs.

  • Large bags are not permitted in the basilica. Deposit any luggage at Ateneo di San Basso (in Piazzetta dei Leoncini).

  • Both St. Mark's Basilica and the nearby Doge's Palace are wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

The cathedral is on the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent to the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) along the Grand Canal. The nearest vaporetto (ferry) stop is San Marco–San Zaccaria.

When to Get There

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so begin or end your Venice tour with a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's Pietà and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—is older than even those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from AD 976 is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
