The Consuegra Windmills are a must-do for Spanish culture and literary history enthusiasts. Be sure to check out one of the restored, functional windmills, for a look at how these structures used to grind grain. Ideally, combine your visit with a stop at the well-preserved Consuegra Castle (Castillo de Consuegra)—purchase a combo ticket online in advance.
Opt for a guided tour for hassle-free transport to and from the 12 remote tower mills. Tours typically leave from Madrid, visit both Consuegra and Toledo, and offer upgrades such as lunch and cheese tastings. Some even follow the route of Don Quixote.
Things to Know Before You Go
To get your bearings, stop by the on-site visitors center first.
Prepare to spend lots of time in the sun, with limited access to shade.
How to Get There
Located just south of Toledo, the Consuegra Windmills are easy to reach on a day trip from Madrid. If you don’t join a tour, it’s best to rent a car for the 2-hour trip to the windmills. Drive from Madrid to the CM-42 highway via the A-42.
When to Get There
The most pleasant time to go to the Consuegra Windmills is late spring or early fall, when the weather is usually warm but not too hot. Summer is peak tourist season. The tourist office (located inside a windmill) is open October through May from 9am to 6pm, and June through September from 9am to 7pm.
Sightseeing Around Toledo
Whether you visit the windmills independently or on a guided tour, don’t miss the chance to add nearby Toledo to the excursion. The historic city is known for its medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, and religious sights. See the 13th-century Toledo Cathedral, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, and the Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca, constructed by Moorish architects in the 12th century.
