The Basics

The historic highlight of Santorini, Ancient Akrotiri is often visited on islandwide sightseeing tours by bus, minivan, or private vehicle. While the settlement can be explored independently, it’s more rewarding to go with a guide who can provide some context to the ruins.

Some Santorini tours combine a guided visit to Akrotiri with trips to picturesque Greek towns and villages such as Oia, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Emporio; free time for swimming and sunbathing at stretches such as Perissa Beach or Red Beach; and wine tastings.

Feeling connected with something very old, admiring the beauty of such accomplishments so long ago. We had a very sweet and generous guide. She was very knowledgeable, great energy, concerned for everyone’s safety, and very orderly. She made a special trip to her favorite bakery to surprise us with the popular great dessert Baklava. And boy was it great.

Archaeological bus tour to Akrotiri excavations & Red beach
Excellent tour. A few extra places in there that we weren’t expecting. Went up to a monastery and through a small village. Could have maybe spent a little less time there though to give us more time on black beach, but overall was very nice. The guide was knowledgeable and fun. Got to see a lot of places in just the one day so if you don’t have much time, this helps you cover some ground quickly.

This was an amazing tour! We were picked up at our villa at the exact time in a beautiful, modern comfortable luxury van. Our professional guide Dimitris was very knowledgeable and a very safe driver. We saw sights in Santorini most people never see. This is a "Must Do" tour when you visit the island!

Explore Akrotiri Private Tour
Tour guide Mariana explained many details of beautiful Akrotiri. You can certainly tour this site by yourself, however having the knowledgeable guide made it come alive for us. We were picked up from our hotel in Oia on time by a professional driver and followed a scenic route to Akrotiri. Highly recommended!

Tasha was not only knowledgeable, but truly excited by her subject. I was thrilled with some of the things I was able to see that I wouldn't have if I had been on my own. GO ON THIS TOUR.

Santorini Tour with Akrotiri & Oia Sunset
Tour did not start off well as we were waiting for 45 minutes for pick up. There were only 7 tourists out of which 3 were only French speaking. Apart from that, tour was fantastic and guide Iannis and his driver were excellent.

Half-Day Santorini South Coast and Akrotiri Tour from Fira
Tanya and Nikos were wonderful. I have MS and need a walker to get around. They were so accommodating, helpful and courteous to me and my disability. My sister and I loved Tanya's fun way of telling us about this beautiful area. She was so outgoing, amusing, knowledgeable and fun. Recommend this tour to all who want to have a great time in Santorini.

Private Tour: Ancient Akrotiri and Santorini Wineries Tour
Ancient Akrotiiri is an amazing place, and our guide was so knowledgeable. I only wish we had had more time there. As a matter fact, we went back a second time on our own. The wine tasting was a terrific event. Our guide Angeloos was a sommelier and a delightful man with a complete knowledge of his subject. I highly recommend this tour.

Delve into Ancient Santorini

Visitors with an interest in the ancient history of the island will want to prioritize Ancient Thera, which showcases ruins dating from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Several museums, including the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum (both in Fira), display objects unearthed from Akrotiri and beyond, while the Santozeum Museum (also in Fira) features frescos from the Bronze Age site.
