Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) and Villa d'Este in Tivoli

Piazza Trento, 5, Tivoli, 00019

The Basics

Most Tivoli tours departing from Rome include visits to both Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. At the latter, tour archaeological ruins of temples, libraries, and thermal baths, including the Maritime Theater, the grand Piazza d’Oro, the Imperial Palace, and the Canopus. At Villa d’Este—commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito—admire views from the Vialone Terrace and the picture-perfect Oval Fountain. To get the most out of your visit, opt for a full- or half-day guided tour through the Lazio countryside.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
This tour was excellent. Inger was an awesome guide, Massimo an excellent driver. And, the rest of our small group was fun to spend the day with. I have wanted to see these sights for several years and was not disappointed in this top-notch experience. Lunch was great too. Several delicious appetizers, water, wine, pasta, and delicious homemade cookies for dessert. They even accommodated my special diet. Thank you, Rome Your Way tours! I will book again!

Small-Group Tour of Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este from Rome
Laura was a wonderful tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and explained the history of Villa D’Este and Rome in an engaging way. I would have given five stars for this tour; however, when we arrived at Hadrian’s Villa the staff there unfortunately did not let us enter. Otherwise, I would have given five stars. I definitely recommend Laura as a tour guide!

Skip the Line: Tivoli - Ticket to Villa d'Este
Pre-booking the tickets made it super easy to get into Villa D'Este and would totally recommend going off-season. No crowds, we had the gardens to ourselves with beautiful views, quiet and peaceful. A great escape if you're running around Rome for a few days.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Being able to hear the water organ was a treat! I would have liked a bit more time in the gardens. I've been before, some 50 years ago, and they are a delight to wander through. Guisseppi was an excellent guide! 5 stars to him!

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Excellent experience with the guide Joseph. This a must see trip to understand the classical Roman emperors way of life. It was raining but it didn’t dampen our enjoyment

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Small group tour of six. Very friendly and knowledgeable guide. Reasonable pace but a lot of walking. You have to be able to climb a lot of steps at the Villa d’Este. Lunch was superb and included wine. Guide did not rush us but moved at our pace. Small six passenger van was clean but a/c needed work. Overall an excellent tour.

Alessandro was a very nice guide, flexible and patient. The villa d'Este was enchanting and Hadrian's villa very impressive

  • If you don’t wish to travel by train, book a charter tour or a private tour that includes transportation.

  • Both the Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa are wheelchair accessible, although Tivoli has some cobblestoned streets.

When to Get There

The Villa d'Este is open from 8:30am until the late afternoon or evening depending on the season, while Hadrian's Villa has slightly shorter hours, again depending on the season. Given Tivoli’s many gardens, spring is a great time to visit.

What to do in Lazio, Italy

Like Rome, Tivoli is set in the Italian region of Lazio. Although the Italian capital is the main draw for most visitors, take some time to visit the rejuvenating thermal waters of the Baths of Bagnaccio or the tumbling Monte Gelato waterfalls. And the weird and wonderful world of the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo (Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo) is an underrated gem.
