Brasov Citadel (Cetatea Brasovului)
Brașov’s citadel is often included on historical city tours, which provide insight into the landmark’s origins. Visitors with limited time in the region can take advantage of multi-day tours that visit Brașov’s fortified features along with other regional highlights such as Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) and Peles Castle. Access to the citadel’s interior is restricted, though a stroll around the facade is worthwhile for the views alone.
Things to Know Before You Go
A visit to Brasov Citadel is a must for photographers seeking sweeping Brasov views and can be valuable for history lovers.
The walk, or climb, to the hilltop location is a popular workout route; good walking shoes are a must.
Don’t expect any tourist information or amenities as the landmark is not currently in regular use.
Occasionally, it’s possible to arrange informal access to the interior though don’t count on it.
How to Get There
The citadel can be accessed by an off-road pedestrian route or along the Strada Cetățuia road. You can ascend one way then descend via another, or take advantage of tours that offer round-trip transfers by private vehicle for exertion-free access. Parking is available.
When to Get There
For the local experience, pack a picnic and arrive just before dusk to enjoy a sunset drink from the scenic lookout. It’s best to avoid the pedestrian path on rainy or snowy days. When in town, keep an eye out for events that occasionally take place inside the citadel, such as festivals and cultural exhibitions.
Brașov’s neighboring town, Râșnov, is home to another, older citadel. Dating back to at least the 14th century, if not earlier, Râșnov Citadel is an iconic symbol of Transylvania and is open to visitors daily. Alternatively, adventurers might like to explore Tâmpa’s peak in search of the elusive Brașovia Citadel ruins.
