The Basics

Travelers come to Meteora to visit the six operational monasteries and walk the many trails in the area. To get the most out of your visit, book a guided tour which will offer historical context. Full-day tours depart from Athens or Thessaloniki to Meteora, or you can make your own way to Kalampaka to enjoy a half-day group, private, or sunset excursion. Adventurous travelers can also embark on a hike or enjoy a rafting trip down the River Ionas.

Full-Day Meteora Tour from Athens by Train
I've been to Meteora 3 times so expected the same amazing visit as I went with someone who had never been. I was pleasantly surprised when our guide showed aspects I'd never seen. Very friendly and knowledgeable.

Meteora Half-Day Tour from Kalambaka
The tour was great, the guide, Maria, was awesome, she spoke very good English and told us about the Geology, Mythology and the history of Meteora. She also shared her own experiences from growing up in the area, which was interesting and different. The only thing missing was that she didn't go with us to the monasteries which was quite a shame since we wanted to hear her stories about them. We recommend Maria very much, she is amazing and we loved her.

Beautiful Sites with a Great Tour Guide

Meteora Sunset Tour from Kalambaka
The sites, the sunset, were all breathtaking and beautiful. But The Key to this tour, was our Tour Guide Jimmy. HE is the reason this tour was phenomenal. Since Jimmy is from the area, You can hear and see the passion, knowledge, and love he has of the whole area. And also Spoke perfect English. The sites are beautiful, but if you want to learn and have some fun doing it, I would recommend the Meteora Sunset Tour with Jimmy as your guide.

The trip was unbelievable, the monasteries were beyond expectation. Everything was organised extremely well. The train tickets, meeting us in Kalambaka, travel thru Meteora snd lastly our guide…. Chris was fantastic, a great sense of humour and his knowledge of the history associated with the area is superb. This is not to be missed! Thank you Chris and Meteora Thrones for a wonderful day and very interesting day!

Panoramic Meteora and all Monasteries Tour from Kalabaka
The beauty of Meteora! The tour guide was excellent, seemed very informed and was patient with all participants. It was great to be informed in advance which monasteries would require more walking/climbing stairs.

Worth the cost and time investment.

2-Day Trip to Delphi and Meteora from Athens
Overall the trip was worth the cost, the time, and the length of bus travel. History and geology converge to give this trip a great perspective. The guides were very pleasant, and did a great job explaining why the areas are so important to Greece, as well as keeping us organized. Poor weather at Meteora (cloud & drizzle) challenged visibility, but that was just the luck of the draw. Viator did a great job. Thanks for the experience.

Panoramic Meteora and all Monasteries Tour from Kalabaka
We came to Meteora to see the monasteries and tour operator Christos did a fabulous job of telling us all about the history of Meteora. We visited 3 different monasteries in person and each had their unique beauty. We also stopped at a few different sites to take excellent pictures. 5 stars for this trip and 5 stars for tour guide Christos.

We had a wonderful time! Demitrius, ur driver was very knowledgeable, helpful, and had great suggestions of which monasteries to visit and where to take pictures. He gave us a lot of historical facts on the ride and we thoroughly enjoyed our car ride with him and the beautiful sights of Meteora!

A special day, it remains a fantastic trip for me . Meteora is a magnificent place and I suggest everyone to make this trip. History, nature, culture and especially monasteries on the roof of the mountains that make you dream. Organisation by Daniel was excellent. As well as our guide ( from Greek ) allowed to know and appreciate the wonders of Meteora.

Hiking Meteora

Meteora Hike with Transport from Kalambaka
We took two tours in Meteora. One was a sunset tour... the second was this hiking tour. Both were excellent and in my opinion the BEST way possible to see Meteora. The hike does require some level of fitness. Chris was our guide and he did a great job of pacing the hike. The views were amazing. I would recommend.

Majestic Sunset on Meteora Rocks Tour
Chris was VERY enthusiastic... we loved his energy. He gave us theories of the geology of Meteora... stories of how the monasteries came into existence... background into the Greek-Orthodox Church... and much more. We had the best views and pictures. I would definitely recommend!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and prepare to walk—all but one of the monasteries is reached by steep steps.

  • Visitors to the monasteries must have their shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are provided at the entrance.

  • The best options for restaurants and cafés are in Kalampaka, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to spend the day.

  • Be sure to check the opening days and times of the monasteries in advance as they vary.

  • Plan to visit two or three monasteries on a day tour—to visit all six, you will need a 2-day tour.

  • St. Stephen's Monastery (Agios Stephanos) is the only wheelchair-accessible monastery.

How to Get There

Meteora is located in Thessaly, about 220 miles (355 kilometers) northwest of Athens, and is accessible by road from the towns of Kalampaka and Kastraki, just to the south. Guided tours often start from Athens, while direct buses and trains run to Kalambaka from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Delphi.

When to Get There

The monasteries are open year-round, but each is closed on a different day, so it’s important to plan ahead. July to October are most popular, and to avoid the crowds, opt for a morning tour. Out-of-season visitors encounter lower entrance fees and fewer crowds, while hikers should come in May or June, before the worst summer heat.

Meteora’s Big Six

Meteora’s cliff-top monasteries were built by Eastern Orthodox hermit monks who settled in the area in the ninth century. Most visitors make a beeline for the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest, oldest, and highest, located at around 2,000 feet (615 meters). There’s also Varlaam Monastery, founded in the 14th century by Hosios Varlaam; the dramatically situated Holy Trinity Monastery; Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, renowned for its spectacular frescoes; the 16th-century Monastery of Rousanou; and the most easily accessible, St. Stephen’s.
